Based
on the essay, the theme explored was imperialism. This was explored by the
writer, George Orwell. The Burmese of the place hated him. It is said to be
imposed on every Englishmen there. According to Orwell, he was stuck between
his hatred of the empire he served and his rage against the evil-spirited
little beasts who tried to make his job impossible. The native people of Burma didn’t
seem to accept Orwell’s presence there. Orwell has described the event of
shooting elephant in detail. He has raised few issues regarding it. When the
news of elephant came, Orwell was unaware on what to do. He wasn’t ready to
shoot it. He just thought to see it. The second issue was the locating the
elephant’s spot. He described the people as those who are unable to give a clear
explanation about the animal. He seems to be upset over this issue. Another
issue was the interest shown by the natives in seeing Orwell shooting the
elephant. All they wanted is meat of the elephant. This made him feel uneasy. Another issue was he portrayed himself as
absurd puppet as the people were waiting to see him shoot the elephant while he
didn’t has the intention to do so. The last issue was that he did kill the
animal for the people’s sake.
