Online Task 3

-Nelson Mandela-

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. His father was Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu Tribe. Mandela himself was educated at University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand and qualified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party's apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961 and was acquitted in 1961. After the banning of the ANC in 1960, Nelson Mandela argued for the setting up of a military wing within the ANC. In June 1961, the ANC executive considered his proposal on the use of violent tactics and agreed that those members who wished to involve themselves in Mandela's campaign would not be stopped from doing so by the ANC. This led to the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe. Mandela was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to five years' imprisonment with hard labour. In 1963, when many fellow leaders of the ANC and the Umkhonto we Sizwe were arrested, Mandela was brought to stand trial with them for plotting to overthrow the government by violence. His statement from the dock received considerable international publicity. On June 12, 1964, eight of the accused, including Mandela, were sentenced to life imprisonment. From 1964 to 1982, he was incarcerated at Robben Island Prison, off Cape Town; thereafter, he was at Pollsmoor Prison, nearby on the mainland. During his years in prison, Nelson Mandela's reputation grew steadily. He was widely accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa and became a potent symbol of resistance as the anti-apartheid movement gathered strength. He consistently refused to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom. Nelson Mandela was released on February 11, 1990. After his release, he plunged himself wholeheartedly into his life's work, striving to attain the goals he and others had set out almost four decades earlier. In 1991, at the first national conference of the ANC held inside South Africa after the organization had been banned in 1960, Mandela was elected President of the ANC while his lifelong friend and colleague, Oliver Tambo, became the organisation's National Chairperson.

POEM

The bravest man I know,
He's a man who risks his life,
The saviour of the black community,
Nelson Mandela the freedom fighter,
The bravest man I know,
Is the man who would rather die,
Not fighting only for his own benefit,
But for many others ,
Nelson Mandela the South African hero.

Online Task 2

Do we have a canon for Malaysian literary works? Let's say we do, who do you think are in it? Consider the fact that their works are well-known and most importantly included as part of the school syllabus- (both in BM and English)

- Datuk A. Samad Said- The Dead Crow
- Dr. Muhammad Haji Salleh – Si Tenggang’s Home Coming

The poems by Erica Jong raises some feminist issues. What are they?
-women’s right, sex issues, love

Do you think they are suitable to teach at the secondary school level? Explain.
-The secondary school students are much matured and exposed compared to those days. Hence Erica Jong’s poems will be suitable to teach them and educate them on many issues. It actually enhances their awareness on women’s rights, sex positive issues and male dominance as well.

Is Hillary Tham's poem more suitable?
-Hillary Tham’s poems are also suitable for the students because her works mostly consider Malaysian’s Scenario and sensitive issues in Malaysia. Most importantly her language has been conveyed in simpler way, which actually eases the reader’s understanding too.

The short tale from the Native American group is about a girl who is unsatisfied with her life. How is this a universal experience? Can it teach our students anything?
-This story definitely teaches a lot of moral values to our students. Mainly not to trust the outlook. It is the trend everywhere to fall for a handsome man and ending up with tormenting future. It teaches to respect the elders too.

From your findings about his background, tell me about the dilemma he conveys through the poem CROSS.
- Langston Hughes is from mixed racial heritage. Hence he had expressed his feeling of frustration and grief of slavery in America. He has conveyed about the struggles went through by him. He was unable to accept himself as white or black. He has showed how the society stereotyped these mixed races.

I find "Dinner Guest: Me" laden with irony and sarcasm. Briefly state if you feel the same.
- Yes I feel the same too. This is mainky because the black people was regarded as poor, dirty, uneducated and low class. But the white people was regarded high society, educated and knowledgeable. This is genuinely unfair.

The experience in the poem Harlem is one that is true for many people. Do you agree?
-According to my point of view, it is true. There are many people stills struggling just to achieve their simple dreams. But it is really sad that, their dreams are unattended just because they are considered “low-cast” and extra. But among this list, there are many kept fighting and even many have been successful too. So no matter how tough is our going but we must have the strength and the self esteem to achieve it.

Langston Hughes fights for the voice of his people. What is the movement called?
- The movement is called New Negro Movement.( Implying a more outspoken advocacy of dignity )

THE ESSAY

Based on the essay, the theme explored was imperialism. This was explored by the writer, George Orwell. The Burmese of the place hated him. It is said to be imposed on every Englishmen there. According to Orwell, he was stuck between his hatred of the empire he served and his rage against the evil-spirited little beasts who tried to make his job impossible. The native people of Burma didn’t seem to accept Orwell’s presence there. Orwell has described the event of shooting elephant in detail. He has raised few issues regarding it. When the news of elephant came, Orwell was unaware on what to do. He wasn’t ready to shoot it. He just thought to see it. The second issue was the locating the elephant’s spot. He described the people as those who are unable to give a clear explanation about the animal. He seems to be upset over this issue. Another issue was the interest shown by the natives in seeing Orwell shooting the elephant. All they wanted is meat of the elephant. This made him feel uneasy.  Another issue was he portrayed himself as absurd puppet as the people were waiting to see him shoot the elephant while he didn’t has the intention to do so. The last issue was that he did kill the animal for the people’s sake.

poems

The issues raised by Hughes are concerned with African Americans but it can be said that as problem experienced by other marginalized ethnic groups. According to Hughes, the way they treat white people and black people are different. White people cannot be cursed. The curse is said to reflect on those who curse but this doesn’t applies to black people. When the Americans are dead, they will be cremated well not like Africans (black people). Africans are seen strangely in the American society. Democracy is merely words in their society as they haven’t experienced it. As I knew, this situation was experienced in India. The treatment between the ethnic group and the others were different there. The ethnic groups were even not allowed into temple those days. Even though, the situation has changed but there are still certain issues remaining unsolved there as stated by Hughes.
